Meet The Characters: Merek Viator, The Wildcard

Children of the Falls is a massive seven book fantasy series spanning several decades, three continents, hundreds of characters, and seven main narratives telling one massive story. Key to this narrative is Merek Viator.

About Merek

A praised knight and a skilled soldier, Merek eventually allowed the fame to go to his head. Through alcohol abuse and gambling, he brought the ultimate disgrace upon his family. Now an outcast, Merek seeks to find the one thing that could restore his family's honor: his lost sister, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a result of Merek's selfishness.

To get her back Merek accepts a job from a mysterious man working under the high king. His mission is to journey to a neighboring country, kill a wizard, steal from him a rare gem, and return it to the high king in exchange for the help he needs to get his sister back.

I picture Merek as the John McClane of my series. The guy is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has the worst luck, and knows how to take a beating.

Ultimately, Merek is a wildcard. A good guy? Maybe. But he's not above making morally ambiguous choices to achieve his goals.

  1. I have created a character in my TV Pilot similar to Merek. Drake Darrow, an orphan by up in a Catholic boys school by a Priest named Father Mike. He's his Guardian and the closest he has to a real Father. At a young age, Father Mike discovered that Drake had a high aptitude for solving puzzles and mathematical equations. He had his IQ tested. He was a genius. So Father Mike steered him towards Math and Science and a healthy dose of old Private Eye movies, such as the Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man and the Mike Hammer series. Drake's future was pretty much set. Despite all great attributes, Drake's lingering doubt was his past. Who was he. What were his parents like. Who were they and why did they leave him at the Father Mike's doorstep. Did they not love him? Was there some circumstance where he had to be brought here and if so, what was it. The doubt followed him into early adulthood. The Military was secretly resurrecting the Montauk, Philadelphia Experiment program. They hired Drake to work on an invisibility project. Drake thought this would be a perfect opportunity to travel back in time and find his true identity. Due to some sabotage by some mysterious hand. In the midst of the time leap, half his body becomes invisible and the Generator he is strapped to seers him with thousands of volts of electricity, that nearly kill him. Due to some odd circumstance, Drake manages to survive, but comes out vastly changed. He discovers he had a spiritual awakening that has allowed him to develop his third eye. He discovers he can read minds, has telekinetic powers and if cut or wounded he heals quickly and has the power to heal others. In his effort to describe some sort of trip he went on, outside his own body, the Military deems him a liability and his best friend throws him in a sanitarium. Father Mike utilizes the help of an old friend US Senator George Peters. Peters manages to get Drake out of the sanitarium. The Senator has aspirations of his own. He's a crusader and wants to clean up Washington. Senator Peters thinks Drake's skills would make him an asset in helping him stamp out Government corruption. Drake agrees, but as the series goes forward the Government corruption leads to the answers he's been searching for about his own past. He discovers there's a secret organization called Cipher that calls the shots in Washington. Cipher find Drake a threat and will do anything to keep Drake from learning the truth about their organization and his past. This character is always conflicted. He has an ex-wife, an archeologist named Harriet, who he felt let him down. His former best friend now has moved on from Military Intelligence to the NSA and tries to thwart him from the truth about the sabotaged experiment. He's bitter about his past and where it went wrong. He feels alone and at times would prefer to work alone. As the series goes on he does build his own little team. There's a hard nosed woman named Kitty Lange, whose past is equally mysterious. She's a former mobster in the federal witness protection program. Her real name Barbara Faltagio. There's a wise cracking hacker named Ringer, whose deeply fascinated with video games and a Good ole boy southern Sheriff named Joe Duncam, who Drake butts heads with once in a while.
